The late 1950s gave us some of the most remarkable classic American vehicles, with the trucks being standout examples. Among these, the 1956 Ford F100 is a personal favorite, but the 1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 restomod offers a distinctive touch and includes the iconic wrap-around windshield.
1958 was an exceptional year for Chevrolet trucks. The Apache was part of the 1955 to 1959 Task Force series, marking a period when utility vehicles began using V8 engines. It was also first year to introduce four-headlight setup and the final year to feature full chrome front fascia.
This particular model caught my eye on Bring A Trailer as a restomod. It has been lowered and painted in a sleek metallic red. Additionally, the builders removed the “Apache” badge from the front fenders, creating a more streamlined appearance.
The name “Apache” referred to the light-duty trucks of the era. In 1958, both the Chevrolet 3100 and the GMC Blue Chip series gained the Fleetside bed, known for its straight lines and rocket-like design elements. However, this Apache features a 6.5-foot Stepside bed, lending it a more retro vibe.
The House of Kolor Cinder Red Metallic paint is stunning, as are the polished American Racing wheels, with sizes of 18″ at the front and 20″ at the rear. Nonetheless, some have noted that the stance could be improved, particularly since the rear suspension sits higher.
The raised rear suspension might be due to the fuel tank being too tall, which could be adjusted if you decide to purchase the Apache. With bidding currently at $32,000, the truck is undervalued, especially considering its custom modifications. We have previously showcased restomod Ford F100 selling for around $150,000.
The V8 surprise
Maybe the coolest feature of this whole build is the engine. The chassis number is 3A580103203, which means it didn’t come with a V8 from the factory. However, it’s got one now. The lump of metal under the hood is a GM Performance ZZ454/440, a 7.4-liter big-block that produces 440 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.
Extra goodies include a four-barrel carburetor, a chrome air cleaner and alternator, aluminum cylinder heads, hydraulic roller lifters, and aluminum Chevrolet-branded rocker covers. Dual electric fans are strapped onto a Flex-a-Lite aluminum radiator. You really need to hear the way this thing sound.
Being a light truck, it’s RWD, with power reaching the Ford 8.8-inch Positraction rear end through a TH400 3-speed automatic. As long as you love the color red, this also has one of the nicest Apache custom leather interiors around. She’s got powered steering, but no A/C by the look of it. Probably this is one of the best 1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 restomod I ever seen.
